He doesn’t drink, he’s uncomfortable hanging out with the groupies, he’s saddened by the moral crisis of the human race, and Mitt Romney sought his advice. Craig McLean meets the unlikely rock god Brandon Flowers. The day ends around 1am, in a Viennese hotel bar, with Tom Jones, cradling a cigar and a brandy, asking Brandon Flowers when he last had a drink. The Killers’ frontman is jittering on the balls of his feet. He’s patently uncomfortable amid the throng of musicians, backing singers and eager girls who have accompanied Jones from his hotel to the American band’s digs, intent, it seems, on seeking out and hanging out with the Las Vegas foursome. Or, more accurately, with their singer. But Flowers is too old-fashioned polite to scarper to the safety of his room. So he stays and gamely tries to indulge in the boozy, wee-hours chit-chat.

Brightside “, which was the first song Flowers and Keuning wrote together, and “Desperate”. Keuning and Flowers played their first live show together at an open mic night at the Cafe Espresso Roma in Las Vegas in January ; the pair, joined by Neal and Norcross, began playing venues around the city where they would also hand out free copies of their demo.
Bassist Dell Neal later left the band due to personal reasons. Ronnie Vannucci Jr. Vannucci was well known on the Las Vegas music scene, having played in numerous bands since he was young. It was while he was drumming for other bands including Daphne Major and Romance Fantasy in that he had met The Killers. The band had played an electrifying show the night before, but the next morning the frontman was subdued. The contrast between the passionate performer who had 10, people following his every word and the shy Mormon struggling to make small talk in the bland hotel room could hardly have been greater.

The only thing missing was their guitarist, Dave Keuning. Keuning started the band back in , when he took out an ad in a Las Vegas newspaper looking for local musicians to play with. Founding bassist Mark Stoermer has also scaled back his involvement in the band, but he continues to play some shows and studio parts. On the road, the Killers were able to soldier on with hired hands, but recording new songs turned out to be a different story.
It was almost like we were doing this dumbed-down, mannequin version of the band. The more collaborators they brought in to fill that void, the worse it got.
Brandon Flowers has the perfect rock singer life. His band The Killers are stadium-sized. He lives in a Las Vegas mansion with his childhood sweetheart and their three sons. He has the lot.

The album that played when you were fingering a trumpet player at the Year Ten end-of-term concert and the soundtrack to basically every episode of The OC has turned ten – yep, it’s been a decade since Hot Fuss was released to a wave of hype, adoration, and lots of girls sighing over Brandon Flowers. But underneath the beautiful cheekbones and indie club night anthems, there was a darker edge to the lyrics; an undercurrent of jealousy and rage.
On music forums and comments sections, millienials who’d just discovered how to change their message board avatar started to formulate a theory. This is followed up with “Midnight Show” – a track where the narrator becomes consumed with jealousy and rage at the fact Jenny is sleeping with someone else and decides to take his “baby’s breath beneath the chandelier”.
In the final part of the trilogy, “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine”, the narrator confesses that he killed Jenny and states that there was “no motive for this crime”. The band have even loosely confirmed the narrative. However, as is popularly believed, the trilogy is not the entire story – I’ve spent the past ten years trawling through Brandon Flowers’ every utterance and have another theory about the album which is not convoluted or tenuous AT ALL.
The background to all of this lies in “Andy, You’re A Star”, a track that admittedly sounds like it’s made of thumb tacks and polyfiller. The narrator talks about watching Andy from afar, seeing him in the gym and on the soccer field. He says if Andy “leaves his number on [his] locker” then he’ll give him a call. He’s in love with Andy but he’s also seen him with a girl – Jenny – and wants Andy to promise that Jenny is not his world.
His amorous intentions towards Andy are pretty damn clear but the rest of the town are suspicious and judge Andy. Is Andy gay too?
Decades later, Brandon Flowers can see that it was unusual: At an age when many of his adolescent friends were doing anything they could to rebel against their parents, the future Killers frontman was spending an increasing amount of time playing golf with his father. In a way, though, Flowers has never not had his elders in mind. Their material is so well crafted that it cuts across a lot of generational lines.
Yet the album reveals new wrinkles too, including a rhythmic flexibility and a welcome feminine presence in the form of appearances by k. The Killers put in the hours on the course this time.

Brandon Flowers has revealed how he once cancelled a tour of his solo material to stay with his wife, who was having suicidal thoughts. The year-old Killers frontman has opened up about the heartbreaking reason he decided to pull out of a string of solo gigs in , telling Q Magazine that is was down to his wife suffering from an aggressive form of Post-Traumatic Stress disorder know as Complex PTSD. And the disorder lives up to his name, with Brendan saying that the way that it affects his wife of 12 years is very complicated.
There are so many things that have happened to her. And no way would we have made it without her getting help. This means that plenty of things are triggering for wife Tana, and as such the couple have made the hard decision to move to Utah from Las Vegas, where he has spent most of his life.
The Killers frontman has opened up about his wife Tana’s struggle with The Man singer admits he and his spouse – who share sons Ammon.
The Killers are a band that like to slowly defy the groove they get settled in — it may take them a while but their subtle change in sound over the years has allowed them to grow as musicians. Saying this, they still do have a sound that everyone can recognise straight away, but the creativity and subtlety built around this from record to record is what makes the difference. With a recent move from Vegas to Utah for lead singer Brandon Flowers, in part due to his wife suffering from PTSD, new album Imploding the Mirage builds on this change in atmosphere to bring out their most collaborative and self-affirming record yet.
The catchiness is back in this belter of an opener. The move to Utah has done him a world of good, it seems. This is set amongst 80s influences and a slice of Springsteen-esque swagger, once again. Apart from the one anomaly, Imploding the Mirage is a well constructed Killers record that sees the band in a fresh space. A strong effort from a dying breed of surviving noughties rock bands.
